Anxiety
From time to time, we all experience anxiety at some point in our lives; anxiety is helpful, and it’s our brain’s way of keeping us vigilant, and safe from harm. Sometimes, however, the anxiety we experience doesn’t diminish – it’s constant, and it’s overwhelming. The experience of anxiety can be different for all of us, however, some common symptoms include an excessive fear or worry, a racing heart, feelings of panic, quick breathing, tightness in the chest, a churning in our stomach, or restlessness, irritability and fatigue from a constant worry and lack of sleep. It can also lead us to avoid certain situations, or everyday events where we fear our anxiety may increase. The Australian Bureau of Statistics suggests that one in four Australians experience an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives. There are many different types of anxiety, such as anxiety in social or specific situations, or when one has experienced a traumatic event. Anxiety can also sometimes occur in-conjunction with depression.
There are a range of evidence-based treatments for anxiety, including cognitive behaviour therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy. If you’d like to have a chat about the worry or the anxiety you’re experiencing, do reach out and call us for a chat on (02) 9560 0225.
