Perinatal Wellbeing
The phase in life of planning for, carrying, or caring for, a baby is one that is fundamentally challenging. It can bring with it huge rewards and joy for many, but for a lot of us, these are times of considerable challenge, and for some, major trauma and suffering. The perinatal stage is considered to run from the time of conception to one-year post birth, and therefore it covers a huge range of experiences and potential major psychological challenges. Sometimes people can have significant trouble conceiving, and this can cause psychological distress and relational challenges.
These experiences are also often not acknowledged by our wider society and social networks, leaving people feeling isolated. For those who have experienced miscarriage or stillbirth, these incredibly difficult experiences can have a major impact on mood and psycholoigical functioning for months and years to come. And for new parents, the first period with a new baby is often hugely challenging given the range of emotions associated with this new life. Such challenges impact mums, dads, and siblings, often requiring a family-centred approach to mental health and wellbeing. The perinatal period is diverse. We do not box you in – we meet you where you are at, focusing on your story and challenges, without judgment, with support and resources to help you at what is one of the most challenging life stages.
